Acne occurs when sebum, one of skin´s natural oils, is unable to leave the skin because the pour is blocked. The result may be a blackhead or whitehead and can lead to bacterial growth under the skin’s surface. This can become inflamed and the rupture of an inflamed area can lead to scarring.
AW3® treatment works by directing pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by the body’s haemoglobin in the blood vessels that feed the sebaceous glands. The treatment reduces blood supply to the sebaceous gland, which slows down production of the body oil sebum. This technique has the name “Selective Photothermolysis”.
The light produced by the AW3® system is controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to reduce the acne without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Tolerance to pain varies from individual but any pain should be very mild. No anaesthetics are required, and many patients describe the feeling as a warming sensation similar to the feeling after a day on the beach.
There may some redness following the treatment. Any sunspots may turn darker and eventually disappear. Should you suffer from a future acne outbreak the treatment can be repeated as a top up.
AW3® systems have been used worldwide by leading specialists for many years. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.
A typical course is between 4-6 sessions with three weeks apart.
It takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to treat the full face. Including consultation and preparation, it should take no longer than 15 mins.
This is a nonsurgical treatment and you won’t need time to recuperate after.
